TS515 Training Scull
s w i f t y e t s t a b l e
We really want you to enjoy sculling in a TS515. We think it is the best designed and most rewarding boat in the world in which to learn to scull.
We want you to become the proud owner of one (or more if you are a club) and we'd like to be able to keep in touch until you are ready to buy. So please enter your email address before watching the video.
OK "a joy shared is a joy doubled" and I love rowing and crew sculling too. But there is something very special about knowing that the speed of the boat is entirely due to your own efforts. And when you win a race you take all of the glory.
Trouble is that the finest racing boats that bring the greatest rewards are so slim that it is almost impossible to learn in them without falling in and the fear of falling in inhibits learning.
SPEED WITH STABILITY
In the past the boats that were available for learning were wide so that they provided stability. But they were also short and often heavy so they were inevitably slow and unrewarding to scull. I can still remember the first stroke I took in a fine cedar boat after 18 months learning first in heavy slow boats. The thrill of the acceleration and of the high speed glide after just one stroke is still with me.
Now here is a new boat from Australia that offers that thrill of high speed for low effort combined with stability and the robustness required of boats that are to be used by novices.
This BONUS video on the right shows how easy it can be to take to the water with no previous experience of sculling a proper rowing boat with sliding seats and a fine hull. It was taken on Lake Windermere.
Not only can stability be provided by the stabilising floats but it can easily be taken away again once the skill of sculling has been mastered. This means that a beginner can be taken through two stages of the learning progression before moving on finally to a fine racing skiff if that is what is desired.
EASY TO HANDLE
The light weight of the boat (20kg hull weight only) has been achieved by using the latest polyethylene moulding technology with a layer of polyethylene foam in between two poylethylene skins. The thickness makes the boat stiff and the foam makes it light. The combination makes it unsinkable.
It is this light weight that transforms this training boat into an exhilarating rowing machine. And it has the added benefit that the boat is very easy to handle when out of the water. It is light enough for one person to pick up and carry comfortably, even when fully rigged.
GOOD STRAIGHT LINE STABILITY
Short boats can be difficult to keep going in a straight line. Early play boats suffered from this problem. Racing boats are long and thin but still require a fin underneath, near the stern to keep them straight. This fin means that you cannot put a racing boat down on the ground carelessly. The TS515 training scull has slim longitudinal runners underneath it and a built in skeg that give it excellent straight line stability whilst making it invulnerable to damage when placed on the ground.
FAST ASSEMBLY
The patented, fully adjustable, quick release rigger system means that the TS515 can be assembled in less than a minute. No tools required.
(The word EDON must be visible on top.)
SPACE SAVING
The matching boat supports mean that the boats can be stacked up to the ceiling.
Quickly remove the rigger and the boats can alternatively be stored alongside other TS515 sculls on racks where previously only one boat could be stored, a great space saver in a crowded boat shed.
VERSATILE
The combined weight of this crew is 20 stone or 127kg so you see that when the oarlocks are set at their maximum height the TS515 is capable of accommodating even the biggest of single scullers! The fact that the oarlocks may be lowered means that the boat is eminently suitable for children too, of course. In fact many schools have taken the boat on for teaching as it fulfills their duty of care obligation.
GREAT FOR KIDS
Most children exhibit less fear than their parents do. But not everybody is a fast and fearless learner. Either way the removal of fear greatly aids learning and kids make rapid progress and really enjoy themselves. Parents meantime are more relaxed.
WHAT IS IT LIKE TO SCULL?
Fantatsic! I jumped in and without adjusting anything I felt like I was sculling in a boat that I was already familiar with. It was like wearing an old slipper. Comfortable. Everything about the way the rig has been set up felt right. The stretcher angle is the best I've come across. My heels never left the stretcher. This has been a gripe of mine for many a year, that boat builders never build enough adjustment into stretchers. For many, many years, before long slides came in, rowers and scullers managed with clogs. The only reason that flexible shoes were introduced was because the rigs were all wrong when extremely long slides were experimented with in the early 70s and people's feet used to fall out of the heel traps.
The TS515 has quite plainly been designed by somebody who is an expert in sculling. The height of the gates above the water give rise to a lovely, level, direct draw of the hands. The boat does not pitch perceptibly and it runs beautifully. In fact after I'd sculled past the boat houses at Putney on the day of the Veterans Head of the River Race, Peter Haining, three times World Champion in lightweight single sculls, came down to tell me that he had been watching and that he thought the boat ran beautifully off the finish.
He sang the praises of the stabiliser system, pointing out how it would encourage novice scullers to reach further out and to pull further through thus lengthening their strokes into those areas where one feels most vulnerable in a racing boat. He loved it.
I love it. This is the first training boat that I have stepped into that has given me the same thrill that I got from a fine boat all those years ago when I first tried one. This is what we should be putting children and novices out in so as to enthuse them. So not only is it well engineered, practical and affordable, it's a great scull. I cannot recommend it highly enough.

CUSTOMER REVIEWS
Edon is fantastic, and the oars, being adjustable and light are a pleasure to use.
This morning after about 30 mins I had got a reasonable stroke going and covered the ground about twice the speed of my kayak! That, when I had never before rowed with a sliding seat and I did not fall in! Another hour and I feel that I am starting to get the hang of it with much to learn.
I am truly delighted with the Edon. I feel safe but at the same time get the excitement of speed, acceleration, good tracking and manoeuvreability. A great boat.

Went sculling today. Brilliant. Absolutely brilliant.

Finally I was sculling with the Edon TS515! A terrific experience. You know, I've never seen a scull boat before, so at beginning I was a little afraid, but assembling the rigger was really easy. I did it in 10 seconds, not more. After 2 hours of exercise on the water, to learn the first boat handling methods which I've only read on the internet before, today I covered a distance of 10km. I've still a lot of thing to learn, however it was a nice first try.

That was one of the best days of my life... It was everything I expected it to be and more!

The boats have proved to be a great success - and in the words of our Junior Coach, "The best money the club has ever spent".
